2014 is about to end and it has been a busy year for me in terms of watching movies. To write this post, I had waited for the release of PK because I had an inner feeling that this movie would feature in my list of favourites and I am glad I waited. This year has been filled with some great Bollywood movies and some terribly bad ones. I’ll spare the bad ones and highlight the good ones instead, so let me present you my top 5 favourite Bollywood movies of 2014.
Queen has to be the most beautiful movie made in Bollywood in recent times. It is one of the very few movies which actually gave me goosebumps! Who would have thought earlier that actress Kangana Ranaut could pull-off the role of Rani, the protagonist, with such flair and brilliance. But, she had mesmerized the audience with her beautiful potrayal of an independent woman who did not allow a broken marriage to pull her down and instead, learned to celebrate life in beautiful Paris and Amsterdam. You can read my blog post on the movie: Kangana Ranaut: The Queen of hearts!Continue reading →
I have been following Arjun Kapoor on Twitter and Facebook for a while, and let me tell you, he knows a thing or two about movie publicity. His recent tweets and updates about his upcoming movie ‘Tevar‘ have actually managed to grab enough eyeballs and spark interest among his fans and general movie lovers. That includes me too! The official trailer of this movie, which is a remake of 2003 superhit Telugu film ‘Okkadu‘ and stars Arjun Kapoor, Sonakshi Sinha and Manoj Bajpai and is directed by debutant director Amit Sharma is finally out today and I have to say, it is amazing!
“Bang Bang” Is this how you name a movie, especially a Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif movie? I asked myself when I first came to know that Siddharth Anand is making the official remake of Hollywood blockbuster “Knight and Day” starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz!
A few months later, the trailer hit the screens. Bang bang! The reception was loud and thumping! And the trailer also became the fastest to collect 2 million views in just 18.5 hours, beating the erstwhile record of Kick, the ‘recordman’ Salman Khan’s movie. That was unbelievable yet believable, because the movie had Bollywood’s most stunningly stylish and red-hot pair of Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif. The pair had set screens ablaze already in Zoya Akhtar’s “Zindagi Naa Milegi Dobara“. They are beauty and brawn epitomized on the celluloid!
However, what they bring firing all guns in Bang Bang are the killer dance moves in plentiful display in the movie’s hottest tracks “Tu Meri” and the title track “Bang Bang“! I love watching both these stars dance, be it in movies or award ceremonies. It was obvious that I would get mesmerized again, after watching the music videos:
and, ‘Bang Bang’
Although I like both the songs, but my vote for best choreography goes to the title track ‘Bang Bang‘. Its a dream to watch Hrtihik and Katrina groove to the peppy retro number with some suave moves. But the dance belongs to Hrithik, who has paid the most fitting tribute to the ‘King of Pop’ Michael Jackson, the person whose dance is immortalized in our minds, and we thought no one could ever come close to matching his footsteps. Surprisingly, there is Hrithik Roshan. India’s very own Michael Jackson. Believe it!
Hrithik-Katrina will definitely be ‘Bang Bang‘ on target! Can’t wait for October 2nd!
When you start thinking, or rather I should say lamenting, that Bollywood is all about “Copy and Paste” and “Same ordinary dish served on a new plate“, you are suddenly hit by something totally unprecedented. And that punch is nothing less than marvellous! Yes, I am talking about the recently-released song “Shake Your Bootiya” from the upcoming Bollywood movie Finding Fanny directed by Homi Adajania of ‘Cocktail’ fame!
The “Fanny Re” song which was released earlier opens with the statutory warning “None of these characters behave like this in the film Finding Fanny or in real life…Don’t ask!”. As if the bizarre, ridiculous and insane actions of the five characters weren’t enough in the music video, which had grabbed many eyeballs once it released, the new song “Shake Your Bootiya” can be claimed to cause people’s eyeballs to pop out of their sockets!
The music video of this new song has been filmed and presented to us in the most unexpected way. It shows Angie (played by actress Deepika Padukone) lying on the floor and looking at a doll house where puppet-like cutouts of the film’s characters, including her, are kept in six different rooms. I wondered what would happen next. And lo! One by one, all the five characters come to life and get their bodies grooving with the beats. I began to smile, which soon turned into a laughter as the ‘mad five’ (I think they should be called that after watching this video) began to shake their booty (lovingly called ‘bootiya‘ in the song) in an absolutely hilarious manner! Funnier are the expressions of Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapur, Dimple Kapadia, Arjun Kapoor and Deepika Padukone; everyone of them have stolen the limelight with their exceptional performance. I bet you can’t stop laughing once you watch them in this quirky video.
Kudos to the brains behind both the music videos. They have managed to offer us something that proves that Bollywood can also come up with ‘out of the box’ thinking and entertain us in ways we haven’t seen or thought before. This movie may not be a ‘100 crore hit’ which has become a custom now, but it will set the path for other film-makers to be adventurous, courageous and tread new paths in making off-beat movies and music alike. I wish Finding Fanny emerges as a super-hit at the box office!
Watch the “Shake Your Bootiya” video here and have a laugh riot!
Since a few days ago, there has been so much fanfare regarding the trailer launch of Farah Khan film “Happy New Year“, and it is out finally! One look at it makes me say only one word: WOW!
The trailer begins in a magnificent manner with a stunning firework display on the Palm Jumeirah archipelago and then the King steps in. Shah Rukh Khan‘s voice coupled with a thriller-style background music instantly got me excited; there is magic in King Khan which he manages to bring alive on celluloid every time! What surprised me was the golden streak on his hair and the scruffy beard as he is often seen clean shaven and black-haired in almost all his films. Only in the prison sequence of Don 2, he had donned a rough and tough look with unkempt long hair and shabby stubble.
Soon, the plot is revealed amid colourful and glittering locations and heavily-loaded naach-gaana! The story revolves around a group of 6 losers, played by the actors Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood, Boman Irani and Vivaan Shah, who is a computer hacker in the film. Their mission is to steal diamonds with the backdrop of a World Dance Championship. Now, this movie seems to be based on a musical heist, which is a very unique concept; so it would be interesting to watch how the heist is shown parallel to music and dance. Let us hope that it doesn’t turn out to be another Tees Maar Khan, the 2010 Farah Khan movie, which was also based on a heist but it bombed at the box-office! It’s a little intriguing to watch Deepika‘s ‘Mohini’ speak in cheesy Marathi accent and Abhishek‘s ‘Nandu’ in typical Bhojpuri. Sonu Sood manages to bring in some humour with his torn-shirt-flying act. Towards, the end Jackie Shroff is introduced as the movie’s antagonist and is followed by some power-packed action. Overall, the movie is replete with different flavours!
The sparkling chemistry between Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone shall light up the screen once again, after their successful pairing in Chennai Express and Om Shanti Om. The lead pair have a huge fan following and should manage to attract a large number of people to the theatres and multiplexes. Interestingly, the actors changed their Twitter handles on Thurday to their character names for the movie — Charlie (SRK), Mohini (Deepika), Nandu (Abhishek), Jag (Sonu Sood), Tammy (Boman) and Rohan (Vivaan). And with the frenzied and unique marketing activities that the makers of the movie have undertaken, the movie should raise interest levels of the people around the world. My curiosity still remains what the concept of Indiawaale could mean in the movie. There has been a lot of mention about the word in all the promotions. Does it refer to the six losers or us, the viewers?
The film is scheduled to be released on Diwali, 24 October 2014, in three different languages Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.
