Trailer review: Happy New Year

Since a few days ago, there has been so much fanfare regarding the trailer launch of Farah Khan film “Happy New Year“, and it is out finally! One look at it makes me say only one word: WOW!

The trailer begins in a magnificent manner with a stunning firework display on the Palm Jumeirah archipelago and then the King steps in. Shah Rukh Khan‘s voice coupled with a thriller-style background music instantly got me excited; there is magic in King Khan which he manages to bring alive on celluloid every time! What surprised me was the golden streak on his hair and the scruffy beard as he is often seen clean shaven and black-haired in almost all his films. Only in the prison sequence of Don 2, he had donned a rough and tough look with unkempt long hair and shabby stubble.

Soon, the plot is revealed amid colourful and glittering locations and heavily-loaded naach-gaana! The story revolves around a group of 6 losers, played by the actors Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood, Boman Irani and Vivaan Shah, who is a computer hacker in the film. Their mission is to steal diamonds with the backdrop of a World Dance Championship. Now, this movie seems to be based on a musical heist, which is a very unique concept; so it would be interesting to watch how the heist is shown parallel to music and dance. Let us hope that  it doesn’t turn out to be another Tees Maar Khan, the 2010 Farah Khan movie, which was also based on a heist but it bombed at the box-office! It’s a little intriguing to watch Deepika‘s ‘Mohini’ speak in cheesy Marathi accent and Abhishek‘s ‘Nandu’ in typical Bhojpuri. Sonu Sood manages to bring in some humour with his torn-shirt-flying act. Towards, the end Jackie Shroff is introduced as the movie’s antagonist and is followed by some power-packed action. Overall, the movie is replete with different flavours!

The sparkling chemistry between Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone shall light up the screen once again, after their successful pairing in Chennai Express and Om Shanti Om. The lead pair have a huge fan following and should manage to attract a large number of people to the theatres and multiplexes. Interestingly, the actors changed their Twitter handles on Thurday to their character names for the movie — Charlie (SRK), Mohini (Deepika), Nandu (Abhishek), Jag (Sonu Sood), Tammy (Boman) and Rohan (Vivaan).  And with the frenzied and unique marketing activities that the makers of the movie have undertaken, the movie should raise interest levels of the people around the world. My curiosity still remains what the concept of Indiawaale could mean in the movie. There has been a lot of mention about the word in all the promotions. Does it refer to the six losers or us, the viewers?

The film is scheduled to be released on Diwali, 24 October 2014, in three different languages Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.
